Every month we’re treated to a wealth of new games to play, but which ones are worth buying? That’s what I’ll try to find out, in the monthly recurring series of Most Impressive PC Games. So in the beginning of every month you can come visit this website, for a quick rundown of the latest and greatest titles, including links to game demos so you can give them a try yourself!
This time I’ll be covering the month of November, 2007 - which means this will be a particularly length edition. As you all probably know, November was the month for many long-awaited releases and an armada of absolutely awesome games. Essentially we’ve had more than a years’ worth of awesome titles released in a single month! Of course this also results in some hefty gaming expenses, and some of you might not be able to buy every game they want - you might want to read on and see which ones you really should get.

As of last friday, amidst a wave of incredibly good games, a single game has kept me away from all others: Unreal Tournament 3. Being a longtime UT fan, more-so of the first than the later editions, I had great expectations for this game… but does it really deliver? The demo was certainly a promising taster for things to come, but nothing could’ve quite prepared me for the experience presented in the full version of UT3. Does this game mark the rebirth of a classic? Or does it fall in mediocrity like UT2004 did?
Honestly, who knows? An Unreal Tournament game is not something you review after a few afternoons of playing; and in my opinion not really something you can even pretend to cover in it’s entirety in a single entry. As such I won’t be answering the above-mentioned questions until my review, instead I’ll give an overview of my experiences with the game. On which fronts does it deliver? Where does it shine? And where are the kinks that need sorting out? Those are the questions I intend to answer today.

If there’s one thing that’s important for a fast-paced multiplayer-based first person shooter, then it’s good quality maps. Unreal Tournament certainly featured plenty of those, but it’s sequels tended to disappoint greatly on this front. Now with Unreal Tournament 3’s European release only days away and the beta demo proving to be surprisingly fun, there is only one question on the minds of Capture the Flag and DeathMatch players worldwide: what will the maps be like!?
Fortunately there has been a fair bit of news on exactly this front, and it’s looking good! But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Further in I’ll be covering some of the maps that have been unveiled in short gameplay videos and a bunch of benchmarking tests. Interestingly it looks as though the demo maps were amongst the most demanding in the entire game, so we can expect better performance than DM-Shangrila and vCTF-Suspense on average! Once again it seems the UT3 engine isn’t just pretty, but amazingly scaleable as well…

As of last weekend I finally made the jump from oldschool CRT monitor goodness to a more modern-day TFT screen. I had always held off on the purchase, because my godly 19″ CRT delivered awesome image quality… and to be honest, the TFT screens I had seen my friends use looked horrid in comparison, or displayed a lot of ghosting and tearing. However, in recent years TFT screens have improved a lot, which prompted me to get one anyway - alongside recommendations from a few of my colleagues.
So say hello to my new 22″ monster, the wellknown HP W2207 TFT Widescreen monitor, well… once I upload some pictures that is. Anyway, the difference with my old iiyama CRT monitor is immediately noticeable. Not only is it lighter and thinner, but it seems about twice as big because it takes up so much horizontal space… which is great! The widescreen format feels much more natural than the regular old square blob and the visual quality is beyond a shadow of a doubt completely superior to my previous CRT monitor.
If you thought my soundcard upgrade two months ago was amazing, then you’ve seen nothing yet. Now you’d be hard-pressed not to mistake my PC for a fullblown home cinema set! So by all means, scroll through for my experience with visual (near-)perfection!

Imagine a virtual fantasy world where dwarves and elves are oppressed by humans. Where walking in the street at night equals signing a death warrant. Where humans are more cruel than the monsters that terrorize them. And where pure good and evil don’t factor into the equation. That’s where I’ve been spending my spare time for the past couple of days - the game world of The Witcher.
Polish developer CDProjekt’s debut title based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s books.
You’re Geralt of Rivia, a famous Witcher ; a human who has undergone extreme mutations to gain superhuman abilities, and works as a monster slayer for hire. Fortunately your adventure starts you off with a severe case of amnesia, which helps smooth the introduction to the setting, characters and environment for those unfamiliar with the books.
Well… as smooth as can be when in the first hour - the tutorial - you get to deal with an invasion of bandits on your castle. A wizard and infamous assassin teaming up to steal the Witchers’ best kept secret. Your friends being killed or injured. And a Sorceress trying to bed you…
