January certainly wasn’t the most amazing month for PC gamers in recent times, but at least it had more to offer than December did. While the list of impressive games is hardly any longer, their quality certainly is! Some of these games are real gems, others perhaps not as great as they may have looked initially, but all of them should be perfect food for the gamer who has already finished playing the great games of 2007 and is looking for something new. There’s bound to be something to your liking here and even low budget gamers get some loving, as 2 out of the following 4 games are budget priced!
Many new games are released every month, but which of these games are the ones worth buying? That’s what I’ll help you find out, in this monthly recurring series of Most Impressive PC Games. So when a new month begins, be certain to head on over to The Game Drone for a quick rundown of the latest and greatest titles, including links to game demos - where available - so you can give them a try for yourself!

A few days ago I received my new Razer Barracuda HP-1 headset, which as you may now is Razer’s high quality 5.1 surround gaming headset. I had used a Barracuda before as well, so I thought I knew what to expect when opening the box… nothing could’ve been further from the truth. You see, Razer has been secretly listening in on what little criticisms were cast in their direction for this headset - and has quietly launched a new and improved version (going by exactly the same name).
Having already used it I knew this headset was one of excellent quality, particularly in it’s intended purpose of generating surround sound. Utilizing 6 speakers - 3 on each side - for front, rear and mid sound as well as a fourth unit for bass, surround sound in this headset easily rivals powerful surround sound speaker-sets. The original design had very few flaws, and what flaws it had where trivial at best. As such it seems strange for Razer to release a new version - and particularly odd for them to do it without any announcements or press statements. Maybe Razer wants to push it’s new stereo headset - the Razer Piranha - instead… who knows.

Soon the time will come for pirates and sailors alike to hoist their sails and get to fighting! Pirates of the Burning Sea, an 18th century seafaring MMO developed by Flying Labs Entertainment, will open up for pre-orders tomorrow and everyone else gets to join in as of the 22nd. But wait, what is this Pirates of the Burning Sea game you ask? A mighty fine question indeed!
Fortunately for you landlubbers, I spent some time with this game during the open beta test. So rather than just whisking you off to some obscure official website with mere tidbits of information - I can provide you with the information that you really want to know: ‘is this game worth my hard-earned cash?’
So let’s get to it shall we?

After one of the most amazing months in gaming history, December was bound to disappoint. However few would have expected the month of gifts, holidays and enormous profits to be this meager. In truth there haven’t really been any impressive releases this past month, as publishers seemed to take a brief respite from their hail of quality games. As such you’ll find this entry to be particularly short for a Most Impressive PC Games list, but it does feature a couple of decent games that happened to be released in December 2007.

You may have been wondering why there still hasn’t been a review of The Witcher on this blog. Truth be told, I haven’t actually played it much since the release of Unreal Tournament 3 and my EVE Online account reactivation. Aside from that, I have been waiting for CDProjekt to release it’s next patch, which promised to solve the notoriously long loading times and occasional crashes. As of last Thursday this 1.2 patch has been released - and has proven to be a welcome surprise well beyond anything anyone could have expected.
Random crashes are essentially gone, as are a couple of minor bugs. These are of course only minor issues - and not particularly worth noting (or at least, not worth writing a blog post about). The real reason why everyone has been waiting for this patch is in the promised loading time improvements. And these certainly do not disappoint. I loaded up a later game and started moving into and out of houses in the most demanding area of the entire game. This highly demanding area used to take 30-35 seconds to load. Now it takes 5-8 seconds! Needless to say houses are nearly instant loads and there’s absolutely no way anyone is going to get fed up with these loading screens anymore.
So let it be known that on Thursday the 20th of December, any and all The Witcher reviews containing complaints and deducting points over loading times and/or crashes - instantly turned into trash. You can download this godly patch here.
