The First UT3 Mods Arrive!

Rants, Free Games 1 Comment

As expected the Unreal Tournament 3 modding community has already launched a variety of promising projects, of which the first few can already be downloaded and played online! Most notable amongst these is the oldschool favorite gametype of ‘Invasion’, of which a team of modders had made a UT3 v1.1 compatible alpha release. You can find this modification here. This mod is receiving constant updates, as is evident by the fact that the most recent release dates to… yesterday.

Meanwhile another, more imaginative, team of modders has actually managed to design and code a full-scale new mod project in the month since release. Fleet Wars, as it’s called, introduces various gamemodes in which you can launch your space fighter and shoot down your mates in intense space combat. Unreal Tournament 3 owners can already enjoy this mod’s version 0.1 alpha release as of two days ago.

Hellgate London - Hands-on Report

Free Games, Impressions, Previews 2 Comments

After the Call of Duty 4 demo, Half Life 2’s Orange Box and Unreal Tournament 3 Demo… it’s not hard to miss the freshly released Hellgate London demo. As a new action/RPG in development by Flagship Studios, mostly comprised of the guys who did Diablo, Hellgate London Title Screenit’s certainly been met with an air of eager anticipation by many fans of Blizzards’ old hack & slash games.

Personally I’ve never actually played any of the Diablo games, and in light of the fairly mediocre trailers I was expecting to be thoroughly disappointed by this demo. Particularly with two great, genuine, RPGs releasing at the same time (NWN 2’s Mask of the Betrayer and The Witcher) this game certainly hasn’t been prominent on my games radar. So did this demo manage to sway me into the camp of believers, or would it prove to be the final nail in the coffin for my Hellgate London experience?

Settlers VI - Demo Impressions

Free Games, Impressions 4 Comments

During the past couple of weeks I’ve got in some time with the Settlers VI: Rise of an Empire demo. It might not be the most highly anticipated RTS, nor very well known, but Settlers 3 was my first ever online game - so I just had to give this one a go, even though parts 4 and 5 sucked ass. Interestingly, The Settlers has always been the only slow RTS series that could keep me entertained… I suppose I was hoping the same would be true for number 6.

In all honesty I hadn’t actually heard anything about this game before playing the demo, other than that it was going to be released this month. I had no idea whether to expect something along the lines of Settlers 5 (horrible) or whether it’d be a return to the Settlers 1-3 roots (great). Turns out it wasn’t much of a disappointment after all! Read on for the details…

A Gamers’ Log 1 - 09/07

Free Games, Impressions, Recurring 5 Comments

So I blog about PC games, but I bet you’re wondering what it is that I actually play. What do I do in between blog posts? That question will be answered every other week in the A Gamers’ Log feature. Think of it as a quick overview of the games I played and perhaps a small prelude to some of the entries to come.

Regular readers of the old Game Drone might recognize this as a return of the Game of the Week feature, in biweekly format. Unfortunately the last such entry on the old blog dates back to early August, so I’ll just take the last two weeks as my guideline instead. Comments and suggestions are of course welcome, it’d also be nice to see what you played during the last two weeks.
