Over the course of the past month we’ve been flooded with a wealth of first person shooter games, many of which incorporate some degree of multiplayer functionality. In all of these games, learning the layout of it’s various maps quickly is essential to success in multiplayer matches. This is of particular importance in games with item pick-ups and objectives, such as the recently released Unreal Tournament 3.
What better subject for a new guide then, but a - slightly disfigured - handful of tips for learning map layouts quickly!? That’s right, I’ll be sharing a collection of tips to help you learn maps. These tips will be mainly aimed towards new Unreal Tournament 3 players, but should also prove useful in other shooters…

As a long time Unreal Tournament fan, I’ve played every incarnation quite a bit - and as of last week that includes the newly released fourth edition: Unreal Tournament 3. During the past three years the game I undoubtedly played most was Unreal Tournament 2004… yet now I find myself unable to even think of starting that game, ever again. Why? It’s simply because Unreal Tournament 3 decimates it, in terms of pure quality gameplay UT2004 couldn’t possibly hope to compete.
Of course the previous paragraph might seem a tad fanboyish, so rather than writing it and leaving it at that, I’ve collected ten reasons as to exactly why I think Unreal Tournament 3 is so much better. Feel free to agree, disagree, discuss and add your own!

As of last friday, amidst a wave of incredibly good games, a single game has kept me away from all others: Unreal Tournament 3. Being a longtime UT fan, more-so of the first than the later editions, I had great expectations for this game… but does it really deliver? The demo was certainly a promising taster for things to come, but nothing could’ve quite prepared me for the experience presented in the full version of UT3. Does this game mark the rebirth of a classic? Or does it fall in mediocrity like UT2004 did?
Honestly, who knows? An Unreal Tournament game is not something you review after a few afternoons of playing; and in my opinion not really something you can even pretend to cover in it’s entirety in a single entry. As such I won’t be answering the above-mentioned questions until my review, instead I’ll give an overview of my experiences with the game. On which fronts does it deliver? Where does it shine? And where are the kinks that need sorting out? Those are the questions I intend to answer today.

If there’s one thing that’s important for a fast-paced multiplayer-based first person shooter, then it’s good quality maps. Unreal Tournament certainly featured plenty of those, but it’s sequels tended to disappoint greatly on this front. Now with Unreal Tournament 3’s European release only days away and the beta demo proving to be surprisingly fun, there is only one question on the minds of Capture the Flag and DeathMatch players worldwide: what will the maps be like!?
Fortunately there has been a fair bit of news on exactly this front, and it’s looking good! But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Further in I’ll be covering some of the maps that have been unveiled in short gameplay videos and a bunch of benchmarking tests. Interestingly it looks as though the demo maps were amongst the most demanding in the entire game, so we can expect better performance than DM-Shangrila and vCTF-Suspense on average! Once again it seems the UT3 engine isn’t just pretty, but amazingly scaleable as well…

With the Unreal Tournament 3 Beta Demo poll running in at 10 votes now, it’s kind of had it’s run. As such I’ve launched a new poll question for you to answer today, with a variety of cool options that will undoubtedly leave you with some heartaches as you try to decide your pick! That’s right: it’s time to choose your favorite recent game to play on a cold winters’ day! Fans of shooters in particular will have a tough choice, in between games like BioShock, The Orange Box, Crysis, Unreal Tournament 3 and Call of Duty 4. But there’s plenty for other gamers too, ranging from underdog The Witcher to the behemoth of huge dynamic battles: Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance. Yikes!
Anyway, on to the Unreal Tournament 3 poll results! Ten people replied with their opinions of the UT3 demo and it looks like everyone liked it. One person thought it was decent, whereas another thought it was Godlike. Next up were three people who thought it was Great and the winner is ‘Fun’ with 5 votes. Clearly it looks as though the Unreal Tournament 3 beta demo was favorably received by everyone and hopefully the same will happen for the full version, which will appear in stores later this week. Of course I’ve got it on preorder and will post up my first impressions… well, the moment I have them!
Don’t forget to vote in the poll to the right - and I’ll see you in two weeks for the results, as well as the next poll!
