Unreal Tournaments’ Third Command
October 30, 2007 3:00 pm RantsIn recent days I’ve talked quite a bit about the Unreal Tournament 3 beta demo. Whether it’s DeathMatch or Vehicle Capture the Flag, I’ve had them both covered. Meanwhile I’ve mostly been playing UT3 DeathMatch alongside the people in my clan, Third Command. Aside from the regular bits of public server play, we’ve recently also gotten into organised 2vs2 and 3vs3 play some more, with some measure of success.
Last week the first 2v2 tournament for the Unreal Tournament 3 demo was announced. Me and Killer397 decided to join in on the fun, so on Thursday - the day before the first match - we played our first organised 2v2 game against fnatic. Surprisingly we managed to drag out a 36 to 31 victory. On matchday one we were immediately pooled in the worst half of the cup, with all but one of the favorites for gold to be our opponents after the first match. This first match against Alliance of Fathers was won comfortably, with a 56-10 victory.
The next match was against team HighFive: tewic of Dignitas fame, and ScHiScH of Begrip gaming. Both amongst the favorites to win the cup and amongst the most wellknown UT players of alltime. Initially we went head-to-head with them, but after reaching a 5-5 score HighFive quickly took the lead. Only towards the final few minutes did we start regaining some ground, but at this point it was already too late and eventually HighFive won with 39 frags to our 21. As such we were out of the tournament, but with our mere 3rd 2v2 game, we had lost by a mere 18 frags to those who lost by a measly 2 frags to the eventual number 2: Dignitas.
Since then we’ve had a few more games, including some 3v3’s. Amongst them was a nice 3v3 against Dignitas this weekend, which we lost by only 10 frags (on 79). It certainly looks like we’re a decent contender amongst the DeathMatch teams, although we’ll mostly be playing Capture the Flag come retail. Unreal Tournament 3 has proven to be surprisingly enjoyable in competitions - and I can’t wait for the full version to ship!
Oh and don’t forget: if you’re still looking for a UT3 CTF team to join and think you’re a good player; we’re recruiting!
