A Gamers’ Log 1 - 09/07

Free Games, Impressions, Recurring 5 Comments

So I blog about PC games, but I bet you’re wondering what it is that I actually play. What do I do in between blog posts? That question will be answered every other week in the A Gamers’ Log feature. Think of it as a quick overview of the games I played and perhaps a small prelude to some of the entries to come.

Regular readers of the old Game Drone might recognize this as a return of the Game of the Week feature, in biweekly format. Unfortunately the last such entry on the old blog dates back to early August, so I’ll just take the last two weeks as my guideline instead. Comments and suggestions are of course welcome, it’d also be nice to see what you played during the last two weeks.

Poll Time - Your Favorite Shooting Experience!

blog, Recurring No Comments

I realize that it’s only been five days since the first poll on this new domain started, but according to the new schedule it’s already time for a new poll! Fortunately this new poll will last a bit longer, for the duration of two weeks to be precise. So you shouldn’t have any problems getting your vote in before the new poll ends. As for the results of the old poll, read on for the full story!

As with - almost - any new site design, the first poll question was: ‘How do you like the new design?’. In these past five days it’s received seven votes, which is decent enough for a new domain I would say. Out of these seven people, one person did not like the new blog. Two others thought it was nice, and the remaining four people loved it. Overall a very good response, which I hope is now enhanced by the newly implemented logo (designed by my friend Jos). I’m relieved to see that there weren’t droves of people voting me back to Blogger, because that would’ve made the investment kind of futile.

And of course there is the new poll, regarding the kinds of shooters you prefer. This should be fairly easy to answer for most of you, I know my personal preference lies with ego shooters (such as Quake and Unreal Tournament) and teambased shooters (such as Tribes and Return to Castle Wolfenstein). What’s your preference? Maybe you like singleplayer shooters like BioShock and Half Life 2, or third person shooters such as Outcast and Chronicles of Riddick? Or perhaps you prefer a good Tactical (Ghost Recon) or Stealth (Thief, Splinter Cell) shooter. Whatever your favorite shooting experience is like, you’d best let me know - and vote in that poll on the right!

See you in two weeks for the results… and a new poll!

14 Tips for Becoming a Better FPS Player!

Guides 7 Comments

Are you one of those players who never seems to rank high on any of the public servers? Is one of your friends so good at every shooter that you want to teach him a lesson for a change? Are you jealous of those ‘pros’ who get banned from servers just because they’re too skilled? Are you an experienced player who just doesn’t seem to get any better anymore? Whatever your story is, if you’ve come for pointers to improve your multiplayer FPS skills, then you’ve come to the right place!

Now I’m not going to argue that I’m some sort of pro gamer. But I do have 8 years of experience with playing shooters online, and have known both many successes, and failures. In all that time I’ve also gained a wealth of knowledge - and today I’ll be sharing some of that will you. Now not all of these tips will be feasible for everyone and some might take a lot of work, but there’s bound to be something in there for everyone. Go on… take a look!

Blogger Poll Finale: Favorite Genres!

blog, Recurring No Comments

Several weeks prior to the launch of this blog I had put a new poll question up on the old site, which was still running until now. As you can see, on the right, there is already a new poll running on this blog, which will continue on to Monday when I’ll be asking a different question. Which still leaves me with the results of the previous poll. You guessed it: I’ll be sharing those tonight.

The poll question was as follows: ‘Which is your favorite genre?’. With 17 different possible answers, this poll featured an option for everyone. Unfortunately only 12 people voted, so about 50% of the genres had 0 votes. Better yet, first place is shared by First Person Shooters and Role Playing Games, both raking in three votes. As for second place: that’s shared between Action, Adventure, Massively Multiplayer Online, Real Time Strategy, Space Sim & Turn Based Strategy - with one vote each. That’s a pretty well rounded result, although surprisingly low in the strategy department, I had expected to see some higher numbers there.

My own favorite genre would probably have to be First Person Shooter, if only because most of the games I play seem to fall into that or the Massively Multiplayer Online category. However, given the chance I would prefer a space-based game of any genre. Too bad that those tend to be few and far between and most of the space games that do come out tend to be mediocre, at best.

Anyway, for now you can enjoy the new poll regarding the new blog. Look back next Monday for the results of the current poll, as well as another new poll question!
