The Three Online Guild Archetypes

Rants, Articles 1 Comment

Over the years the virtual world of MMORPGs has given birth to a wide array of guilds, groups of like minded players. These guilds are as varied as the players themselves and come in all shapes and sizes. In such a crowded environment it can be hard for a guild to distinguish itself from the rest and attract members. It can also be hard to decide on a format for a guild you might be looking to create. In that light, I decided to write this quick recap of the three online guild archetypes.

So if you’ve always wanted to form a guild, but never quite had a basis to start from, then reading this will be a good start. Likewise, if you’ve been looking for a good intro into the various kinds of guild leadership or membership, or perhaps just want something to fuel your discussions of the ‘best’ guild type, then you’ve come to the right place. Well then… on to the rest!

Settlers VI - Demo Impressions

Free Games, Impressions 4 Comments

During the past couple of weeks I’ve got in some time with the Settlers VI: Rise of an Empire demo. It might not be the most highly anticipated RTS, nor very well known, but Settlers 3 was my first ever online game - so I just had to give this one a go, even though parts 4 and 5 sucked ass. Interestingly, The Settlers has always been the only slow RTS series that could keep me entertained… I suppose I was hoping the same would be true for number 6.

In all honesty I hadn’t actually heard anything about this game before playing the demo, other than that it was going to be released this month. I had no idea whether to expect something along the lines of Settlers 5 (horrible) or whether it’d be a return to the Settlers 1-3 roots (great). Turns out it wasn’t much of a disappointment after all! Read on for the details…

A Game Delivery!

Rants 4 Comments

During the past few weeks I’ve ordered an enormous amount of games in various online shops. The games I’ve ordered are BioShock, Star Wolves 2, X3: Reunion, The Witcher, Titan Quest: Immortal Throne, Supreme Commander & Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer. That’s quite a lot of gaming goodness for 150 euro, but I digress; the thing is, I probably wouldn’t have purchased most of these games had I not found them at bargain prices, online.

I find myself purchasing more and more games on the internet, whereas it’s been quite a while since I’ve last bought a game in a store. With game prices significantly lower in webshops and most regular stores opening up webshops of their own, what reason is there to still go by and see what they have to offer? After all, they have a webshop: I might as well browse that for anything interesting, and then purchase it online. Heck, I frequently receive online orders in my mail before the games are available in local stores! So why is it that most gamers I know still purchase their games at the local game shop?

Thus far I’ve only purchased games at reputable shops, and had zero negative experiences (okay, so my BioShock copy is slightly delayed - I’ll live). I received Guild Wars: Eye of the North several days before the servers went live - and I expect both Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer and The Witcher will arrive a ways early as well! There’s something nice about just browsing a stores website for good deals on games, and then raking in some classics for no money at all - only to have them delivered to your doorstep just a day later.

That said, I wonder: what do you prefer? Do you occassionally visit a webshop and select a bunch of inexpensive games, or would you rather head on over to your local game store and browse through their collection in person? Have you had any bad experiences with online shopping, or local stores for that matter? Do you see more and more gamers discovering the wonders of inexpensive online shopping? Go on, share your opinions and experiences!

Now then… I’ll be back to waiting for my games to be released & delivered…

17 Tips for Beginning EVE Players

Guides 3 Comments

Two days ago I started a new character in the popular mmorpg EVE Online. Since then my character has trained a few skills, gained his first million ISK and purchased the best frigate he could find. More importantly: over the past couple of days I’ve learned a thing or two about EVE. Having made a bunch of mistakes myself, and witnessed others make a few of their own, I’ve assembled a list of tips for rookie pilots in the EVE-O universe.

Whether you’re intending to become a miner, industrialist, mission runner, ratter, PvPer or simply don’t know yet… these 17 tips should help any beginning EVE player off to a good start. And if that’s not enough, then you can scroll down below the list and find a collection of websites containing information that can come in handy for any EVE player. If you’d like to start playing EVE Online yourself, then head on over here and get your 14 day trial account! Don’t forget to message/evemail Aeroth Aerinaeris if you happen to start out as Gallente and would like to team up.

Screenshot Spotlight 1 - 09/07

Media, Recurring No Comments

Games can be more than just a fun timesink; at times they are a thing of true beauty. This biweekly feature is dedicated purely to demonstrating the beauty of modern day gaming. So every other week another Screenshot Spotlight will appear featuring some sort of beautiful, or otherwise interesting, screenshot I recently acquired.

However, rather than simply posting some pretty picture and leaving it at that, I’ll include a bit of information about the game it was taken in - and the circumstances of the screenshot. Think of it as an optional background story for you to read. If you don’t care for any of that you can of course simply admire the picture and be done with it!
