A Gamers’ Log 2 - 09/07

So I blog about PC games, but I bet you’re wondering what it is that I actually play. What do I do in between blog posts? That question will be answered every other week in the “A Gamers’ Log” feature. Think of it as a quick overview of the games I played and perhaps a small prelude to some of the entries to come.

Of course there’s plenty of room to discuss your own gaming habits for the past few weeks as well. So if you’d like to respond to what I’ve written, or add in your own list of cool (or horrid) games you’ve played recently, then by all means: do so!

Two weeks ago I was mostly playing EVE Online, slowly edging my way out of the 14-day trial - which ended today. My character breached 1 million skill points a couple of days ago and has trained most of the very basic of skills up to level 3/4, so I’ll be on the lookout for a corporation next as I reactivate my account with a game time card.

It’s definitely a good game and I can see myself playing this for a long time to come, particularly with the massive graphical and gameplay update scheduled for November. If you want to join in on the fun then head on over here for a trial account and then read this for some beginner tips. After that you can meet up with me - Aeroth Aerinaeris in game - on Xfire/EVEMail. Gallente preferred because I don’t much care for 3 hours worth of travel time ;)

Another game I just had to give a go was the Enemy Territory: Quake Wars demo. I was very positively surprised by the beta test and playing the demo with all settings maxed out only solidified that feeling. This is not Battlefield - and that’s exactly what makes it good. It certainly doesn’t appear to be shaping up to be the best multiplayer shooter of the year, in contrast to Team Fortress 2 and Unreal Tournament 3, but it’ll be a very solid game nonetheless. I definitely had some fun with this demo - although the spread on weapons is still too high for my tastes and definitely put any ideas of competitive play out of my head, permanently. I might pick it up for the occasional fun public/LAN game, but when you’re talking great multiplayer games then I don’t see this one fitting in the list. Get the demo here (727 MB).

EVE Online

I can see myself playing this for a long time to come …

Last week was fairly void of games, beyond the occasional game of Unreal Tournament 2004 public server DeathMatch with some friends. This week Unreal Tournament 2004 persisted as we got in a few more games of DM and I played some TAM on the side, but nothing too spectacular. The new OpenCup is about to start though, so I might be called for a couple of matches for beMEAN again, although with a 17-player roster that seems doubtful.

The only other game that saw some playtime last week was the World in Conflict demo. I finally made my way through the entire tutorial and then played a bunch of multiplayer matches. That experience, combined with the awesome beta experiences and the very high review scores ensured I bought the game first chance I got on Friday. And it proved to be well worth the money, as not only the multiplayer portion of the game, but also the singleplayer gameplay, proved to be beyond excellent. Definitely my favorite game of 2007 thus far, although my copy of BioShock has yet to arrive so all I have to go on are demo experiences for that game. Get the demo here (1.2 GB - UK Version), here (1.4 GB - German Version) or here (1.2 GB - US Version).

World in Conflict

Definitely my favorite game of 2007 thus far …

That’s about it for the past two weeks, but the coming two weeks look to be a lot more crowded as several of my ordered games are set to arrive soon. Neverwinter Nights 2: Mark of the Betrayer could be arriving any day now, along with Supreme Commander. Personally I’m rooting for this friday, so I can have some fun with both over the weekend. Aside from that I’ll probably be playing some more EVE and UT2004, as well as World in Conflict of course. Beyond that.. who knows… personally I think that should be more than enough to keep me busy for the next two weeks - and beyond.

See you in two weeks for the first October edition of A Gamers’ Log!
